After five generations, the Chrysler Town & Country nameplate was put to rest with the unveiling of the Chrysler Pacifica at the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It’s been around ever since, but did you know that the Chrysler Pacifica is a recycled name from a crossover Chrysler had produced not too long before the revamp?
Starting in 2005, the Pacifica was made into four trim levels: Base, Touring, Limited, and a special-edition Signature Series. Faux wood trim came standard in Pacifica Touring and Limited models, while the base-model Pacifica, offered colored plastic trim.
Did you know the Chrysler Pacifica is a nameplate used for a variety of vehicles? The name was first used on a luxury van concept vehicle in 1999, and later a crossover concept in 2002. Both ideas eventually came to fruition, but at very different times.
From 2004 to 2008, it was used as a midsize crossover, and since 2017, it has been used as the replacement to the Town and Country minivan.
So, what happened with the original Pacifica and why has it found more success as a van instead of a crossover?
The idea of the Pacifica was to be a sporty crossover car that wasn’t a van but wasn’t an SUV. This put a sporty twist on the practical minivan that some parents seem to loathe while others love, while not necessarily being a wagon. Chrysler, of all the brands on the market, was ahead of the curve in the whole luxury crossover craze by coming out with the Pacifica back in 2004. Right car, wrong time?
At the time, minivans were more of the craze instead of SUVs. We had just gotten out of 9/11 and the rising of gas prices, so parents wanted something more fuel efficient while also being able to fit everyone in a car instead of taking multiple vehicles. Minivans could fit more than the Pacifica at the time.
The Chrysler Pacifica has a ton of success as a van and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down any time soon. Named by Parent’s Magazine as consistently one of the best family cars as well as multiple other awards, the Pacifica will have everything you need and more.
